Microsoft Canada Executive Summary Microsoft Canada is preparing its marketing plan for the Xbox over the coming year. The Xbox was launched the previous year and positioned as the complete home entertainment solution combining video gaming, the Internet and DVD playback. The Xbox is the most robust gaming console on the market, but faces stiff competition in its product category. The Sony Playstation 2 is the market leader with over 50% of the console market. Microsoft also faces competition from Nintendo and their GameCube. Microsoftââ¬â¢s goal is to become the market leader in the category by dethroning Sony. In order to accomplish this goal Microsoft Canada must develop its marketing plan for 2002. Specifically, Microsoft must decide which target market to focus their efforts on. Specifically, they need to decide whether or not to continue focussing their attention on the male 16-24 year old ââ¬Å"heavy gamerâ⬠which is also the target segment of Sony. Or, do they shift their focus to the lighter user and try to develop a niche strategy. The backdrop of the targeting decision is how to position the Xbox. Microsoft could choose to position the system simply as the most powerful gaming console available, or they could also choose to focus on the complete functionality of the product including online gaming and DVD playback. Considering the various opportunities and challenges, Microsoft should continue to focus its campaign on the heavy male user since this demographic are typically the trendsetters when it comes to the industry and are best equipped to appreciate the gaming advantages of the system. By targeting this segment while focussing marketing efforts on the superior technology of the product along with the online gaming functionality, Microsoft should be able to differentiate itself from the Playstation by offering gamers a more technologically advanced gaming system with an online gaming feature not available from Sony. Is Regeneration an Anti-war Novel? Essay
ââ¬Å"Opposition gives definitionâ⬠said Heraclitus in 6th century BC (Graham). If that was true, in 21st century people are given ââ¬Å"definitionâ⬠by the usage of the prefix ââ¬Å"anti-ââ¬Å". Therefore, an ââ¬Å"anti-warâ⬠novel is one, which opposes any form of aggressive competition. Regeneration by Pat Barker is one of the plentiful novels inspired by the atrocious events of the First World War. Barkerââ¬â¢s book does not focus on depicting combats and stratagems. On the contrary, it portrays in detail the mental and physical consequences of the war. Regeneration is an ââ¬Å"anti-warâ⬠novel, which touches upon the appalling harm done by warfare and the following recovery process. Barker condemns war and her negative attitude is displayed by her complex, credible characters and hard emphasis on consequences. Description of both mental and physical war injuries tags every chapter of the novel, thus provoking the readerââ¬â¢s sympathy. Barker aims to create a picture of the real circumstances during that period. Both by imaginary and real characters she succeeds in creating the solemn and discouraging mood in Craiglockheart. The introduction of the patients of the hospital (Prior, Anderson, Burns and Campbell) arises sympathy in the reader. Each of them has his own misfortune caused by war, which would probably mark his life forever. They would never be able to continue their ordinary lives and would have to get used to new habits. The tragic fates of these patients make the reader indeed sympathetic. Barker uses the fates of her character to express in a hidden voice her negative attitude towards the war, thus provoking ââ¬Å"anti-warâ⬠feelings in the reader. In addition, Barker uses other very interesting techniques to represent the awful effects of war on human psychology ââ¬â representation of nightmares, dreams and hallucinations. For example, such a moment is the imaginary meeting, which Sassoon has with his friend Orme in Chapter 13 from part two. Sassoon wakes up ââ¬Å"to find Orme standing immediately inside the doorâ⬠, but then ââ¬Å"he remembered that Orme was deadâ⬠(Barker 143). This episode represents another aspect of the war effect ââ¬â grief for all the lost friends, relatives and comrades. In that particular episode, Barker also implies the idea that Ormeââ¬â¢s visitation is a wake-up call from the dead, delivered by one of them and reminding silently of what Sassoon is delicately trying to forget. With its emotional shade the scene once again makes the reader sympathetic. As a whole, the description of the damage caused to patients, both mental and physical, makes the reader sympathetic. That sympathy in turn, promotes another attitude ââ¬â ââ¬Å"anti-warâ⬠attitude. In the novel not only physical and mental injuries are depicted, but also social ones. The social conditions are curved by war. Society puts restrictions on the individual. Any form of protest is forbidden and all those who dare object are condemned ââ¬â ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëconchiesââ¬â¢, cowards, shirkers, scrimshankers and degeneratesâ⬠(Barker 4). The novel begins with Sassoonââ¬â¢s bold Declaration. As the plot unfolds, it becomes evident that his ideas are entirely justified but rejected. The government pronounces him mentally ill and silences him in a mental hospital. By censuring Sassoonââ¬â¢s protest, the country prevents another upcoming remonstrance. Also, expression of sexuality is confined in the society. At that time homosexuals would not be accepted in the army. When Sassoon implies his homosexuality during one of his sà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½ances with Rivers, the doctor warns him. Even though Rivers really feels sympathy for Sassoonââ¬â¢s unfortunate situation in the prejudiced society, he tells him that he must face the reality he lives in. The doctor explains that society could become more accepting in the future, but it is not likely ââ¬Å"that any movement towards greater tolerance would persist in wartimeâ⬠(Barker 204). He implies that it is not possible for a single man to change the world and make it look from another angle. Rivers also states its time for Sassoon to grow up and start ââ¬Å"living in the real worldâ⬠, whether or not he agrees (Barker 205). The purpose of his words is to convince Sassoon that if he admits his sexuality this would worsen his present situation even more. Moreover, through Priorââ¬â¢s character another social restriction that is denounced ââ¬â censorship. During wartime there is no privacy at all: ââ¬Å"I censored it every week. We read all their lettersâ⬠¦.â⬠(Barker 131). Also, soldiers are never told if their letters have arrived. They are kept like prisoners on the front with their homes and loved ones far away. By depicting all of these social restrictions from the war time Barker maintains the ââ¬Å"anti-warâ⬠mood throughout the novel. Furthermore, by the end of the novel Riversââ¬â¢ convictions shift and he realizes how unjust the war is, how awful and long-lasting the consequences are, thus contributing to the peak of the readerââ¬â¢s anti-war certainty. The idea of unjust war is implied through Riverââ¬â¢s change. In the beginning his ultimate goal is to see all of his patients return to the front in good health, prepared to fight once again for their country. However, because of some events Rivers starts to question warââ¬â¢s justification and realizes that he sends his patients to an almost certain death. The culmination of his ââ¬Å"anti-warâ⬠conviction is when he witnesses Burnsââ¬â¢ dire condition: ââ¬Å"Nothing justifies this. Nothing nothing nothingâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Barker 180). Furthermore, the doctor confirms his fears when he goes to observe Yeallandââ¬â¢s methods. As he watches Callanââ¬â¢s treatment Rivers is horrified: ââ¬Å"He couldnââ¬â¢t bare to go on watching. He looked down at the backs of his clasped handsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Barker 232). After that episode Rivers considers the differences between himself and Yealland and for his horror realizes that they are the same. In Chapter 14 his thoughts are released: ââ¬Å"Obviously he and Yealland were both in the business of controlling people. Each of them fitted young men back into role of warrior â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Barker 238). At that point Rivers understands that instead of curing his patients he actually breaks them down. Even though his methods are less severe than Yeallandââ¬â¢s, the effect is the same. To a certain extent Rivers is violating his patientsââ¬â¢ rights because of war. All of these examples portray how Barker gradually, but effectively builds the ââ¬Å"anti-warâ⬠suggestion in Regeneration. Barkerââ¬â¢s novel Regeneration is an ââ¬Å"anti-warâ⬠book because it provides a unique possibility to the contemporary reader to dive into the depths of a war that had irrevocable effects on soldiersââ¬â¢ mentality. The authorââ¬â¢s personal attitude is expressed by her charactersââ¬â¢ behavior and destiny in the society. She aims to remind people of what effects the war had on previous generations and warn them, so that the same mistake does not occur. Will it?

Unraveling the meaning of ââ¬Å"Kill the Indian, Save the Manâ⬠There are so many different definitions of the word racism, but how does each peron define it? One individual, Richard Henry Pratt, clearly knew how to thoroughly define the word, ââ¬Å"Segregating any class or race of people apart from the rest of the people kills the progress of the segregated people or makes their growth very slowâ⬠(Howard 2016). Unfortunately, we are still living in the repercussion of Prattââ¬â¢s word. The United Statesââ¬â¢ history is full of examples that have led to the ethnocentric development of the country. One of the most remote examples of this ethnocentric belief is displayed with the construction of off-reservation boarding schools for Native Americans first started in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, by former general, Richard Henry Pratt. The purpose of the schools was to strip Native Americans of their cultural traditions and teach them the skills necessary to function in American Society. Pratt keyed this belief with the saying ââ¬Å"Kill the Indian, save the man,â⬠in order to justify his reasons to assimilate the Indians to the white culture. However, were the American Indians really forced to assimilate because society wanted to help them, or because they wanted America to be solely made of true Americans with American culture? Twilight: Interpersonal Communication Movie Review Through the story of the characters and their interpersonal communication movies have become a household commodity and often times emerge as a mainstream ââ¬Å"pop culture.â⬠Twilight is the recent adaptation from novel to film based off the book by Stephanie Meyer released in 2005 by the same title. The film tells a story about the forbidden love between two individuals through the telling of a seventeen year-old girl. Through this forbidden love between the two main characters, Bella and Edward, there is a variety of different interpersonal communication that occurs. Immediately into the relationship of Bella and Edward there is conflict and this is seen throughout the film. This along with Edward not telling the truth about how he saved Bella led to tension between the two and a sort of back and forth like bickering. Chanel uses a pyramid model that has contributed to its success. In the pyramid model, the centre idea is have a main product line and have other additional lines, which are popular but does not affect the business of main product line. This model is mostly used in luxury brands. The focus of Chanel is Haute Couture, but the brand has also included a variety of product lines that were also very popular among the premium clients of Chanel but they have never lost their focus from the main high fashion. They have efficiently managed their control over distribution (Luxton, Reid and Mavondo 2015). The 4P framework of Innovation Keller 2016 SWOT analysis of Chanel Strengths Chanel has a very strong brand image as it is a well-known name in the luxury fashion industry. The Coco chanel story is timeless and very influencing to the public. The fabric used by Chanel is of fine and tweed fabric is used, embroidery, chains, and buttons are used. The best thing about the design is that the designs of Chanel are refined but the original theme and concept of the design are not changed, the brand maintains the originality. In the shows of brand Chanel always something unique is being depicted. The staff members and the consultants are trained from Paris (Perreault Jr, Cannon and McCarthy 2013). Weakness One of the Weaknesses of the brand is that the website of the brand Chanel does not provide much information about the various products available so the clients have to either call the Chanel stores operators of walk down to the stores in order to get details about the products of Chanel. Chanel has very less boutiques in Asian region for example there are no boutiques of Chanel in India. One of the most significant weaknesses of Chanel is that the products are highly priced and only a particular segment of society can afford to buy the products of the brand Chanel. The production cost of Chanel is very high (Liu 2014). Opportunities There is scope for Chanel in Asian countries like, India, china and Japan where there is huge demand for products of Chanel. Chanel has a scope to expand its business in India and increase their customer base. Chanel needs to improve its website and blogs so that it is appealing to the public and its premium class clients (Keller 2016). Threats The counterfeit goods are a great threat to Chanel, as it spoils the brand image and makes it difficult to manage and differentiate the products. In Asian region, the designs of Chanel are plagiarized and sold in the markets by the small and local business. There is too much competition in the fashion and luxury segment as there are other famous brands like Gucci, Prada and Loius Vuitton. The customers of this segment are very aware and they always look for new and unique designs so that their clothes and accessories are symbol of their status, these customers are not brand loyal rather they look for what is new in the market (CHANEL 2017). Marketing Strategies for Chanel Chanel can develop and innovate its products so that the customers of Chanel get something new, they can use contemporary designs for their cloth line, jewelries, watches and accessories. The old designs will not be changed but slightly modified. Modern patterns will be used like the Geometry pattern and the tribal prints that targets the youth. More causal dresses should be included. The jewelry designs and accessories should be innovated and more new design scan be included in these segment, gems from all around world can be used, rare gems that are not much used should be used in necklines of the dresses of females. For advertising, the brand must target televisions as well and launch their own fashion Channel that will display all the designs and the fresh arrivals of the house of Chanel. Billboards can be used for advertising especially in the affluent areas. For promotional activities, the brand should organize and sponsor famous fashion shows in other cities of the world. The clients should be given messages and mailed about the new arrivals and if any new product is launched. The website of Chanel needs to be developed and all the necessary information about the products is included in the website of Chanel, so that there are less complaints from customers that they have to either call at the store or visit the store just to get to know basic information regarding the products like price (Ivan?ov 2014). Products like cosmetics that does not involve touching and seeing for checking the quality can be made available in the online stores of Chanel (Fakkert, Voorveld and van Reijmersdal 2015). For public relation activities there should be press releases and magazines should be given to the regular customers on monthly basis. A proper research should be done about the market conditions and the competitors so that the brand can implement strategies based on those finding and also become a market leader. Survey should be done and the customer suggestions should be entertained and needed changes should be done so that the brand can establish goodwill in the market (Saadatmand et al. 2015). Chanel needs to take strong actions for protecting its trademark and copy right on its designs so that none of its products or designs are plagiarized in any form. The brand also needs to expand more in the Asian region, they should open stores and boutiques in china, Indian and Japan. The brand can make particular segment for the people of developing and underdeveloped countries so that they can afford some of the products of the company like the Cosmetics and accessories (Hollensen 2015). Should We Legalize Marijuana? Essay Why Not? Naim Jones South Suburban Community College Author Note This paper was prepared for Sociology 101, Section 002, taught by Professor Richardson. Abstract Already, we have brought back around old styles of fashion and music. Now, as more of our generation begins to enter the political world we are seeing a change in policies that have held firm for almost a century. More specifically, we are seeing a change in the attitude toward marijuana and whether or not it should be legalized. During the time of illegalization of marijuana, the drug had a vastly negative feeling associated with it, which many people now believe to be inaccurate and unfair. Now that people are more informed, more connected and more vocal, the United States government should allow and even encourage more research of the dangers and addictive nature of the drug which will assuredly legalize medical use and possibly recreational use to benefit the people and the economy greatly.This paper will discuss many topics pertaining to marijuana. It will begin by explaining the history of marijuana in this country. Then it will discuss public opinion of marijuana and reasons for that opinion. Next, it will dispel false rumors about the effects of marijuana. It will then talk about a few disadvantages of marijuana. After it will counter those disadvantages with several advantages of marijuana. Next, it will discuss Colorado and Washington States situation since legalizing marijuana recreationally. It will then inform the reader of the other states pursuing legalization of marijuana in some degree. Finally,it will conclude with Arkansass take on marijuana and efforts to get it passed medically. Cannabis is a plant that is grown in many places throughout the world. It is a fast-growing plant that requires only eight to twelve weeks to mature. It chokes out most other plants grown around it and has a resistant to all but eight out of one hundred known pests. Cannabis is grown for two main reasons; for industrial hemp and for marijuana. Industrial hemp includes the seeds, stems, roots and all other parts of Cannabis except for the dried leaves. It h as over 50,000 different product applications including: paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction, health food, and fuel. Marijuana is the dried leavesof Cannabis that contains high-levels of THC and can be used for many medical issues. THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), is the chemical in marijuana that is also produced naturally within the human brain and controls the influence of pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement. With such a lengthy list of versatile uses comes many questions all stemming from the bigger question, What can marijuana do for us?.The answer will become evident by responding to the following questions: What is the history of marijuana in America? How does the American public view marijuana? What are the cons of using marijuana? Are there benefits from using marijuana? What has happened to states that have already legalized pot? Throughout time the U.S. government has put many sanctions and ignorant beliefs about marijuanainto themainstream view of theAmerican public.Times have changed and problems need solving, the legalization of marijuana is the answer to more than just a few of Americas problems. What is the history of marijuana in America? As early as the 1600s hemp has existed in America. Back then, colonial farmers were forced to grow hemp to send back to England to be used in rope, sails, and clothing. It was not until the late nineteenth century that marijuana became popular for its medicinal uses. After the Mexican Revolution of 1910 the United States started to get its first flood of Hispanic immigrants. These immigrants introduced the possibility of using marijuana recreationally. Smoking marijuana really began to take off in the years leading up to the Great Depression. Due to this unfortunate timing, and the connection to Hispanic immigrants marijuana caught a lot of blame for the increased unemployment and violence in America. By 1931 twenty-nine states had made marijuana illegal and that only increased until America entered World War II in the 1941. Following the start of the war the Department of Agricultural encouraged farmers to grow hemp to help make parachut es and other military equipment. During that time 375,000 acres of hemp was being farmed annually. However, after the war ended stark opposition of marijuana returned and within seven years the Boggs Act of 1952 was passed setting mandatory prison sentences for any drug-related offenses, including marijuana offenses. In 1970 Congress and the Nixon administration reduced the sentences for drug-related offenses butalso began a system of scheduling drugs based on their danger and usefulness. Marijuana became a Schedule I drug, meaning it is a dangerous substance that has no recognized medical use and that has a high potential for abuse (Eaves). Schedule I drugs are prohibited from being tested which has hampered any ability of solidifying proof of marijuanas advantages. In addition to marijuana being classified as a Schedule I drug: cocaine and methamphetamine are Schedule II drugs; Tylenol and steroids are Schedule III drugs; Xanax is a Schedule IV drug; and Robitussin is a Schedule V drug (Drug Scheduling). Each higher schedule means it has more medical uses and isless addictive. In discussing the safety of marijuana at the Pennsylvania state Senate hearing over a bill to legalize marijuana for medical purposes Mike Fraser, Ph.D., testified, The group does not recommend the use of medical mariju ana citing a need for further research to demonstrate it is safe and effective in patient care. He believes, the federal government downgrade marijuanas status as a Schedule I drug to facilitate research (Iorfino). How Does The Public View Marijuana? In David Boazs article New Polls Show Libertarian Trends on Marriage, Marijuana, Guns he begins by discussing the rise in the publics affiliation with the Republican Party, seen in an accompanying Pew Poll. However, he counters this rise with three other contradictory Pew Polls, all showing opinions trending to the left. One of those polls is the poll Should Marijuana Use be Legal? (above). In eleven years the Pew Poll has shown that the percentage of people with pro-legalization opinions has risen from 16 to 45 percent. Another accompanying poll shows that support legalization of the drug among people under age thirty is 57 percent compared to only 30 percent of seniors who support it. Boaz attributes the failure of California to legalize recreational marijuana use in the 2010 election to the high percentage of Baby Boomers who are against idea of legalization. The growing support for legalization with young people shows the changing of times and the inevitability of marijuana being legalized throughout the country like it has been in Colorado and Washington State. These two states made national headlines recently when each voted to legalize the sale of marijuana for recreational use. This change in law went into effect in Colorado on January 1, 2014; Washington State will become effective in June 2014.Support from high profile celebrities has helped influence the drive of young people to pass this issue. Just last year President Barack Obama said he believes Marijuana is not as dangerous asalcohol. He has also been quoted saying, When I was a kid, I inhaled frequently. That was the point. This was a pun to former president Bill Clintons comment at the beginning of his presidential term saying I experimented with marijuana a time or two but I didnt inhale and didnt try it again. In addition to these two presidents, Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas admitted to smoking marijuana while in college and Oprah Winfrey, Forbess 2013 most influential celebrity, admitted to having smoked marijuana in her past (the last time being 1982) and would be willing to try it again (Marijuana Policy Project). They are not expected to have as large a turnout as Colorado and are expected to only bring in $180 million in four years but they are finding themselves in the same debate as Colorado; spend or save? This is the best debate states could face in an economy like todays and Washington State is not mad that they have that.The graph (Above) shows the predicted outcome of GSP for both Colorado and Washington State after passing recreational marijuana legislation. IHS economist Steven Frable wrote that Based on our forecast, the state and local government sectors share of gross state product (GSP) will grow by 5.0% in 2017 in Washington , and 1.7% in Colorado (Wile). This jump in in predicted GSP will help Washington State tremendously because they currently have a twenty percent deficit whereas Colorado only has a two percent defi cit (Wile). AlthoughColorado and Washington State are the only two states to have legalized marijuana recreationally many states have legalized it medically. Currently twenty-one states and Washington D.C. have legalized medical marijuana. These include historically democratic states like: California, Hawaii, and Vermont; as well as historically republican states like: Arizona and Montana. In addition to those states that have already legalized medical marijuana, several others have bills pending to try to pass marijuana. Some of those states include: New York (as mentioned before), Ohio, and one southern state being Mississippi. One thing the image shown above leaves out is the states that have medical marijuana initiatives on the ballet like the southern states of Florida and Arkansas. Some states are wanting to follow suit with Colorado and Washington State as well. In 2014 Oregon, California, and Hawaii are set to vote on legalizing recreational marijuana. By the 2016 presidential election another five states are projected to vote on recreational marijuana as well. InArkansas voters struck down an initiative in 2012 to be the first southern state to legalize marijuana medically. The state split almost down the middle with 51.4 percent voting not to legalize medical marijuana and 48.6 percent to legalize medical marijuana. Since that vote many citizens have asked current Arkansas politicians to sponsor a bill to legalize marijuana medically. Although a few reportedly said they would sponsor a bill they said they doubted it would get past the Republican-state congress and recommended that the only way to get medical marijuana passed is through another initiative in 2014. Now citizens have nearly enoughsignatures to put two competingmedical marijuana bills on the balletin November.Currentlythere are two leading candidates in Arkansas that are for the Governor office in the 2014 election. Both Mike Ross and Asa Hutchinson are against legalizing medical marijuana. Democrat Mike Rosss reason for being against the issue is because it is contrary to w hat our national government laws decree. Republican Asa Hutchinson, former head of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, has a history of vehemently going after marijuana abusers and sending them to prison. He believes, the concept of smoking marijuana as medicine has been proved by the medical community (Asa Hutchinson, Republican Gubernatorial Candidate, Talks about Growing Arkansas Economy). Neither of these politicians would help the citizens in their pursuit of a medical marijuana bill in Arkansas. In conclusion,marijuana was wrongfully made illegal many years ago and has remained illegal for almost a century. With some changes in law and reduction of classification, marijuana could become a game-changer and life-saver medically; help create and save billions in tax dollars; and help keep millions of innocent, non-violent citizens out of prison. Historically, America has flirted with several political ideas, but after the new laws in Colorado and Washington State, and the possibility of having medical marijuana legalized in Arkansas it is safe to say we are on a full-fledged date with Mary Jane.
